Joss James

Health Professions Council (HPC) State-registered art therapist
BAAT registered private practitioner

After a previous career in film design, Joss qualified as an art psychotherapist in 2004. Since then she has worked as a state registered art therapist in private practice, community, education and NHS settings; currently dividing her time between working with adults, children and families in her private practice and in NHS CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health services) She has served on BAAT (British Association of Art Therapists) council and peer-reviews for our professional international journal ‘Inscape’.

She offers art therapy based on psychodynamic principles, where the relationship between the client, the art and the therapist are at the core of the healing process.

As a fine artist she has a deep respect and understanding of the therapeutic process of art making which allows clients to explore parts of themselves that may be difficult to speak about.

As an experienced mindfulness practitioner she also offers mindful art therapy using breath and compassion focused work with art making. This new model links recent research and development in neuro-science showing how art-making and mindfulness practices have the ability to soothe and calm over-aroused brain states and facilitate lasting change. Individual adult and child or family art psychotherapy is available as assessment, consultation, brief-focussed work or longer exploration, dependant on need and resources.
