Workshop One: Opening to Joy and Expression

To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. Workshop Four: Active Hope

Active hope is waking up to the beauty of life on whose behalf we can act. We belong to this world’ -Joanna Macy

A creative and explorative workshop integrating therapeutic art making with guided mindfulness practices.

These are difficult and challenging times we find ourselves in. We are in the context of environmental and economic challenges (amongst other individual and collective challenges)

Through mindfulness meditation, creative art expression and group sharing we will open to our individual and collective responses. We will share and have time to express our responses through image making and discussion. Feelings of fear and grief, will be held with the compassion and care that is the orientation of mindfulness practice and will help us engage and potentially take actions. We will be meeting the challenges and difficulties that are present for us, and move into including our hopes and aspirations. What positive change do we may wish to be part of? We will be connecting with our imagination, potential to be resilient and the ways that we can resource ourselves.

This workshop is inspired by the approach of The Work That Reconnects, and the book Active Hope by Joanna Macy and Chris Johnston, and incorporates elements of mindfulness meditation and art therapy practices. During the session there will be opportunity for self-expression, exploring care for oneself and others, investigating your direct experience and, practicing with others in a group context. You will be guided and supported during the workshop by the facilitator.

As well as traditional art materials you may wish to create with natural materials (e.g. leaves/twigs/shells etc). During some of these workshops we have some of the session outdoors (for online sessions- guidance will be provided).

You are welcome to attend if you are a beginner, or more experienced, to either mindfulness and/or art making.

Back to Nature: An Afternoon of Yoga and Art Therapy

6 – 9 pm Thursday 20th June 2024
at Stanmer Park, Brighton

Come and join Nicky Roland (Art Therapist) and Tammy McCann (Yoga teacher) for an afternoon which will include mindful yoga, mindfulness meditation and creative art making.

We will start with gentle yoga, exploring the natural movements of the body to bring us into a somatic experience of presence, discovering the beauty of our inner nature.

We will then move into creative practice, and group sharing. There will be art materials available, including the nature-based found materials around us.

This is a time for restoring in our bodies, connecting with ourselves and the land around us, then opening to any wisdom we receive through doing so.

About Tammy:

www.yogawithtammy.co.uk

Tammy McCann: 500hr RYT, 100hr Meditation TT

Tammy’s practice is rooted in Buddhism. For many years she practised at a local centre, attending many retreats. She has also explored the teachings and practises of many different traditions, and this fuelled her love of philosophy and inquiry. Yoga played an important part throughout these earlier explorations and led her to the decision to train formally. She completed a two-year 500-hour yoga teacher training which was intense and challenging, but gave her a solid grounding in yoga’s spiritual and physical elements. The training explored the eight limbs of yoga, and as she studied she found her home in the practice. Teaching what she has learned, and what inspires and excites her, is now her passion.

Tammy’s classes are playful and accessible, while also being heartfelt and informed by a deep belief in the power of yoga. This is the power she communicates through a spirit of lightness, openness and playfulness. Only in freedom, compassionate curiosity and acceptance will true healing happen, and Tammy brings this into her classes by exploring all the elements of yoga: postures, breathwork and meditation. www.yogawithtammy.co.uk
