Workshop One: Opening to Joy and Expression

To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives― James Baraz, Author of ‘Awakening Joy’

How can we open to joy and creative expression? This is a creative and explorative workshop integrating therapeutic art making with guided mindfulness meditation, open to all levels of experience.

This session will develop your understanding of mindfulness, gratitude and appreciation practices.  . During the time of environmental and economic challenges (amongst other individual and collective challenges) the practices of mindfulness and opening to joy have the potential to support our own personal wellbeing, and ways in which you can meet others facing their own challenges. From the basis of our own resourcing and resilience we may find new ways to be able to meet and respond to the collective challenges we are experiencing.

Aims:

  • Deepen your understanding of mindfulness, gratitude and appreciation practices
  • Understand some of the potential barriers to these practices
  • Find ways to resource and nourish yourself in challenging times

All levels of experience with mindfulness and/or art making are welcome to attend!

Workshop Four: Active Hope

Active hope is waking up to the beauty of life on whose behalf we can act. We belong to this world’ -Joanna Macy

A creative and explorative workshop integrating therapeutic art making with guided mindfulness practices.

These are difficult and challenging times we find ourselves in. We are in the context of environmental and economic challenges (amongst other individual and collective challenges)

Through mindfulness meditation, creative art expression and group sharing we will open to our individual and collective responses. We will share and have time to express our responses through image making and discussion. Feelings of fear and grief, will be held with the compassion and care that is the orientation of mindfulness practice and will help us engage and potentially take actions. We will be meeting the challenges and difficulties that are present for us, and move into including our hopes and aspirations. What positive change do we may wish to be part of? We will be connecting with our imagination, potential to be resilient and the ways that we can resource ourselves.

This workshop is inspired by the approach of The Work That Reconnects, and the book Active Hope by Joanna Macy and Chris Johnston, and incorporates elements of mindfulness meditation and art therapy practices. During the session there will be opportunity for self-expression, exploring care for oneself and others, investigating your direct experience and, practicing with others in a group context. You will be guided and supported during the workshop by the facilitator.

As well as traditional art materials you may wish to create with natural materials (e.g. leaves/twigs/shells etc). During some of these workshops we have some of the session outdoors (for online sessions- guidance will be provided).

You are welcome to attend if you are a beginner, or more experienced, to either mindfulness and/or art making.
